How Footwear Stores Photograph Shoes for True-to-Size AR Try-On
Picture a shoe store owner in Brisbane. She sells leather boots and running sneakers online and from one small shop. Shoppers keep asking the same question: will this look right on my feet? She wants AR try-on on her website so customers can see each shoe at true size on their own foot. Then she hits the first question every store hits: what photos do you need from me?
This article answers it. Plain, practical, and honest.
Why the photos matter so much for shoes
AR try-on is only as good as the photos behind it. For furniture, a sofa an inch off still looks like a sofa. For shoes the margin is thinner. A heel a few millimetres too high or a toe box too wide, and the shopper sees it instantly. Feet are personal. The try-on has to earn trust in seconds, and trust starts with honest photos plus the real measurements of the shoe.
You do not need a studio. You do not need a photographer. A phone, daylight, and a tape measure will do it. Here is exactly what works.
Shot 1: the straight-on side view
Put the shoe on a plain surface against a white wall or a sheet of paper. Stand the phone on a box so the lens is level with the shoe, not looking down at it. Take one photo of each side, dead straight. The lens should sit the same distance from the toe and the heel. This is the most important shot. It sets the silhouette the whole try-on builds from.
Shot 2: top, back, and sole
Shoot the top of the shoe from directly above. Then the back, the same way. Then flip it and shoot the sole straight on. Three photos, all level, all straight. These fill in what the side view cannot show: the lacing, the heel cup, the tread. Skip the angled creative shots for this part. Honest flat views matter more than pretty ones.
Shot 3: the details shoppers zoom on
Now the close-ups: the toe shape, the stitching, the logo, the texture of the material. These are the photos shoppers zoom into before they buy, and they are also what makes the try-on feel real instead of cartoonish. Hold the phone steady and let it focus. A blurry detail photo is worse than none.
The tape measure photos
This is the step most stores skip, and the one that makes the try-on true-to-size. Lay the shoe flat and photograph it with a tape measure running heel to toe along the full length. Photograph the width across the widest part, and the heel height. Then send the numbers in writing: length, width, heel height, size (for example UK 8, EU 42). True size comes from measurements, not from guessing off photos. A view built from a photo with no numbers is a guess. A view built from a photo plus the real dimensions is a replica.
Light and background: the boring rules
- Daylight, not shop lights. Take the photos near a window. Warm shop bulbs turn white shoes yellow in the photo, and the try-on carries that yellow to the customer.
- Plain background. A white sheet of paper or a plain wall. Busy backgrounds confuse the edges of the shoe.
- One shoe is enough. If the pair is identical, one shoe of the pair will do. If your pairs vary, send the left and the right.
- Every colour you sell. A navy boot and a black boot need separate photos. Customers notice when the try-on shows the wrong colour.
What happens after you send the photos
At ARQR360 the store's job ends at the camera. You send the photos and measurements of your bestselling styles, bestsellers first. Our designing department produces true-to-size AR (Augmented Reality) views from them, hosts them, and hands you links and QR codes that open the try-on in your customer's phone browser. No app for your customers. No photography or modelling work on your side. About seven days from photos to a live try-on on your site.
And we do not disappear after launch. Every ARQR360 store gets follow-ups. We check how the try-on is performing, add new season styles as they land, and build custom packages when a store needs something beyond the standard catalogue, like a branded AR page or a wholesale collection. That is the part a self-serve tool never does. Someone looks at your store and keeps it working.
The honest truth about footwear try-on: it shows the shoe at its true size and true look on the shopper's foot. It does not tell the shopper how the shoe feels, which is why we always say true size, never fit. Shoppers use it to check the look and the size against their own feet. That is a real buying decision, and it starts with the photos in this article.

The cheapest way to check if it works for your store
You do not have to commit to anything to find out. Send photos of your bestselling shoe, taken the way this article describes, and we will build you one true-to-size AR (Augmented Reality) view free. Put it on your own foot, check it against the real shoe, and see if your customers would use it. If it does not convince you, you have spent nothing. Try the live footwear demo first: it opens in your phone browser, no install.
Good photos are step one. What the finished view then does to your size returns is step two, covered in how shoe stores use AR to cut size returns. The views those photos become look like the ones in our sample footwear catalogue.
FAQ
Do I need a professional photographer for AR try-on photos?
No. A phone, daylight, and a tape measure are enough if you follow the angles above. Straight level shots matter more than expensive gear. Blurry or angled photos slow the work down, so take the ten minutes to get them right.
How many photos do you need per shoe?
Around eight: both sides, top, back, sole, three or four detail close-ups, plus the tape measure shots and the written measurements. One shoe of the pair is enough if both are identical, and every colour you sell needs its own set.
How long before my shoes are live in try-on?
About seven days from your photos arriving. After that we keep adding new season styles as they land. Try the live footwear demo on your own phone first to see what the result looks like.
