How to Photograph Your Rugs for True-to-Size AR

Picture a rug store owner in Manchester. She has a wall of rolled rugs and a website full of flat photos. A customer writes in: will this rug fit my living room? The photos cannot answer. So she starts looking into AR. Then she finds the catch. Every AR route starts with the rug itself, captured well enough to reproduce at true size. The good news: you do not need a studio. You need a phone, a tape measure, and ten minutes per rug.
This is the practical version, written for the person holding the phone.
Why your photos decide the quality
An AR view is only as good as what it is built from. Blurry photos make soft edges. Crooked angles make a rug that sits wrong at full size. Dark shots hide the pattern that made the customer click in the first place. The store sending the photos controls the quality of what comes back. So the ten minutes matter.
The five shots that cover a rug
Lay the rug flat. Smooth the curls at the corners. Then take these:
- Straight down from above. Stand over the middle and hold the phone flat, parallel to the floor. Get the whole rug in the frame with a little margin. This is the main shot.
- Each corner. Four close shots showing the border and the edge binding. Corners are where quality shows.
- The pile up close. One shot from about a foot away showing the texture. This shows how the rug catches the light.
- The back. The back shows the weave and often carries the size label. One shot.
- Fringe, if it has any. One shot showing the fringe or the bound edge straight on.
Eight shots in total. No art direction needed. Sharp beats pretty.
Light matters more than the camera
Shoot in daylight if you can. Open the shop blinds or carry the rug near a window. Even overhead shop light works if it is uniform, but mixed light, half daylight and half warm bulb, changes the color of the pattern. Turn off the flash. It blows out the middle and darkens the edges. If the rug is large, stand on a step stool for the straight-down shot so the whole piece fits without tilting the phone.
Measure what you actually sell

True-to-size AR starts with true numbers. Measure the rug flat: length and width, edge to edge, fringe left out unless you sell the rug with the fringe counted in the size. Send the numbers with the photos. If your listing says 160 x 230 cm, the AR view must be 160 x 230 cm. We check every finished view against the listed size before it goes live, and we rebuild anything that misses.
What happens after you send the photos

This is the part most store owners get wrong. They assume AR means hiring a 3D team or learning new software. On the done-for-you route there is no software to learn. You send the photos and the measurements. We build the true-to-size AR (Augmented Reality) views from them, host them, and hand you links and QR codes. The links go on your product pages. The QR codes go in the shop. No programming, no changes to your website needed. We send you a QR code for each product. Put it on the product page, on your packaging, in your shop, on social media, anywhere. Your buyer scans it and sees your rug in their own room, real size.
About seven days from photos arriving to a live catalogue. Start with your bestsellers, maybe ten rugs, and watch what customers do with them before you shoot the rest of the stock.

The cheapest way to check if it works for your store
You do not have to commit to anything to find out. Send a photo of your bestselling rug and we will build you a free true-to-size AR (Augmented Reality) view. Point it at your own floor, check the size with your own eyes, and see if your customers would use it. If it does not convince you, you have spent nothing. Try the live rug demo first: it opens in your phone browser, no install.
FAQ
Do I need a professional photographer?
No. A recent phone in daylight is enough. Sharp, straight, well lit. That is the whole bar.
What if my rug has thick pile or long fringe?
Send the close texture shot and the fringe shot from the list above. They show how the edge and the surface behave. We build from what the photos show.
How long before my rugs are live?
About seven days from your photos and measurements arriving. Start with the bestsellers. Try the live rug demo on your own phone first to see the end result.
